| Delphinium staphysagria |
In the last newsletter, I introduced a discussion of the contents of most daily droppers: NSOL. This month, we'll take a look at the S. Staphysagria is one of the best-known homeopathic remedies for anger and the effects of its suppression.
The plant, commonly known as Delphinium, is native to both the northern hemisphere and the high mountains of tropical Africa. Many species are cultivated in gardens and the flowers are commonly purple but exist in a range of colours. All parts of the plant contain a poisonous alkaloid, which causes nausea when eaten and possible death if consumed in large quantities. It is used as an herbal extract against parasites such as head lice and in tincture against asthma and dropsy.
As mentioned above, homeopaths most often prescribe Staphysagria for a patient suffering from suppressed anger. Often, the emotion is so well suppressed that the patient never feels angry and has trouble standing up for themselves. They avoid confrontations, their temperament is sweet and gentle, and they often draw sympathy from others. Eventually, the anger cannot be contained and the outbursts may be marked by a tendency to throw things.
Physically, the patient may crave sweets and suffer from gastrointestinal upset. Symptoms range from chronic diarrhea and constipation, cramping pains to bloating and flatulence. Chronic urinary tract infections are common in women, especially with a new partner or relationship. We need not look very far for the origin of the expression 'pissed off'! While the new relationship may be a very happy time, it can force the resolution of previously suppressed conflicts.
Another less common use is for the sequelae of surgical procedures. The body may unconsciously experience the surgery as an attack and violation. There may be lower back pain or trouble regaining intestinal function after the discontinuation of the anaesthetic.
The suppression of our feelings is almost inevitable since our society typically views anger as a shameful emotion. Staphysagria is often included in the daily droppers to encourage the gentle release of anger. No, it doesn't mean that you're an angry person!
